Justin’s Cocktails

The fine print

House rules.

This site is one home bar's collection: the drinks I actually make, written down the way I actually make them, so my friends and family stop asking me to text screenshots. A few principles govern everything on it.

  1. Fresh citrus is non-negotiable.

There is no substitute for fresh limes. If you don't have limes, don't make margaritas… or at least don't tell me about it. Bottled juice is how good tequila dies.

  2. Your drink is only as good as your worst ingredient.

So don't skimp out. Cointreau, not generic triple sec. Mr. Black, not whatever was on sale. The difference is never subtle.

  3. The jigger stays in the drawer.

I pour based on "feeling" — meaning more will come out of the bottle depending on how the kids behaved that day. The measurements on this site are honest estimates. Treat them the same way.

  4. Big ice or no ice.

Small cubes dilute a drink before you've finished saying cheers. Good-sized cubes, always.

  5. Every recipe here earned its place.

Nothing gets published until it's been made, tweaked, and argued over at this bar. The untested experiments stay in the notebook until they're ready.

  6. Feel free to bastardize a recipe if you must.

But that's on you. Actually, on second thought, don't do that. Just drink wine or whisky if you don't want to follow instructions.

The lowball in most of these photos was liberated from a bar in Lake Como. It pours better than anything I've ever paid for. #humblebrag
