This icy expression of the espresso martini was created by Jason Hedges, Beverage Director at Laurent Tourondel Hospitality and co-founder of Bar-IQ. It's a frozen, creamy twist on the classic espresso martini, substituting dark rum for vodka and adding heavy cream for a richer texture. Simple to make but seriously delicious, this frozen cocktail is perfect for coffee lovers looking for a refreshing dessert drink, especially during warmer months.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Dark rum
  • 1 oz Kahlua
  • 1 oz Fresh espresso
  • 1 oz Simple syrup
  • 1 oz Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Ice
  • Garnish: Fresh whipped cream and cocoa nibs

Directions

  1. Brew a fresh espresso shot and let it cool completely.
  2. In a blender, add the rum, Kahlua, cooled espresso, simple syrup, heavy cream, and ice.
  3. Blend the ingredients until smooth and creamy.
  4. Taste the mixture and adjust the sweetness or coffee flavor if needed.
  5. Pour the mixture into chilled cocktail glasses.
  6. Top with fresh whipped cream and sprinkle with cocoa nibs for garnish.

Simple Syrup

  1. Combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring until sugar is completely dissolved.
  3. Allow to cool before using.
  4. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Notes/Tips

For the best texture, make sure your espresso is completely cooled before blending. You can even refrigerate it for 15-20 minutes to chill it further.

If you prefer a thicker frozen drink, you can freeze the espresso in an ice cube tray ahead of time and use those instead of regular ice.
