Ranch Water
Spirit-Based · 1 serving · Serve: Topo Chico bottle or highball glass
Ranch Water is a refreshing, minimalist cocktail that originated in West Texas and has gained popularity throughout the Southwest. This simple yet satisfying drink combines blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, and Topo Chico mineral water for a clean, crisp, and effervescent experience. The beauty of Ranch Water lies in its straightforward preparation and light, thirst-quenching quality, making it perfect for hot summer days. While the recipe is incredibly simple, the specific use of Topo Chico—a Mexican mineral water known for its intense carbonation and mineral content—is what gives this cocktail its distinctive character.
Ingredients
- 1 12-ounce bottle of Topo Chico mineral water
- 1.5 oz Blanco tequila
- 0.25 oz Fresh lime juice
- 1 Barspoon simple syrup (optional)
- Garnish: Lime wedge
Directions
- Open the bottle of Topo Chico.
- Pour out or drink about 2 ounces of the mineral water to make room for the other ingredients.

- Lightly stir with a straw or chopstick to combine.
- Garnish with a lime wedge.
- Serve immediately, while the Topo Chico is still highly carbonated.
Simple Syrup
- Combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring until sugar is completely dissolved.
- Allow to cool before using.
- Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to one month.
Notes/Tips
Topo Chico is the traditional and preferred mineral water for this cocktail due to its intense carbonation and distinctive mineral profile. If Topo Chico isn't available, substitute with another highly carbonated mineral water.
For an authentic Texas experience, serve the drink directly in the Topo Chico bottle. If serving in a glass, use a tall highball glass filled with ice.
Ranch Water is meant to be a light, refreshing drink. The simple syrup is truly optional—many purists skip it entirely, letting the natural sweetness of the tequila shine through.
